We Are an Inactive Lot
There are multiple wars against various enemies being fought in our modern society at present although it may not be commonly publicized in this manner. Make no mistake, our society and even the worlds population in general is truly at war against a common enemy. That enemy is "modern chronic disease" caused mainly by our increasingly sedentary lifestyles.
A war needs to be fought against it so we do not burden the children of future generations with a 20 - 30 year shortened lifespan. Surely most people would agree this is not a good legacy to leave them.
How can such an intelligent species of beings evolved into a race of inactive sitters? We sit at the table, we sit watching TV, we sit at work, we sit in the car, we sit at the bar, we sit on the airplane, we sit on the train and we sit on machinery to replace manual labor. We spend almost all of our day hardly moving at all. Seventy percent of us do not even get the bare minimum of 30 minutes of moderate activity each day to maintain a basic degree of good health.
If vigorous movement is the stimulus for the hormones necessary to instruct every tissue, system, process and every single cell in the human body to repair, rebuild, renew and replace itself how do we think we can maintain good health? Do we not care?
The effects of at least 35 chronic major diseases and conditions can be linked back to a sedentary lifestyle. And the definition of a sedentary lifestyle is someone who spends the majority of their day sitting.
We all are aware that a basic minimum of vigorous movement is necessary for us to remain healthy but it is actually much more than that. It is a matter of life and death. Inactivity kills two million of us annually around the world. There are little other problems we face in our modern world that cause so much human suffering and financial cost to so many people and their families.
Yet what is the average person doing about it? Seeing 70% of us are sedentary nothing really is being done about it. We need to change the way we think about our health. Somehow we have become doctor and drug reliant and when we get symptoms of illness we expect them to fix us up.
