10 Tips to Help You Maintain That Diet

When we begin a diet, usually we are very motivated. We plan all our meals, buy all our food in, and start looking forward to losing a lot of weight. Usually the first few days go well. We are less likely to go off the rails during this time because we've often planned it so that we're not going out, and are therefore less likely to be tempted. The first period is more likely to work out well. At this time, we may check our weight daily and are encouraged by success.

Nevertheless it is often a false start and it doesn't continue. One reason could be that we start giving our self little treats because we think we deserve them. It may be that we're easily bored and our old foods and way of life are too tempting. Reason number three might be that you that you become de motivated when you lose weight slower than you hoped. I've drawn together the following with the aim of helping you if any of this rings bells:

1. Do ensure that your aims are realistic and, if you need to, adjust them. Better to lose weight little and often than huge amounts in a short time.

2. Recall why you started - this may help you regain motivation. Maybe you wanted to look better to attract a partner. It could be that it was for reasons of your health. Whether for these or other reasons, it made you take the big step to start -thinking about it again may remotivate you.

3. Consider improving your cooking abilities. Increasing your cookery skills should lead to less fattening meals and less, or no calorie adding take aways. If you achieve this, you should be better able to cook healthier, lower calorie meals - perhaps more fish and vegetables.

4. Allow yourself a vice - you don't need to deprive yourself of everything you love. It might be an ice cream every weekend, or a small glass of wine each evening. Make it legal - that way you won't feel that cheating is OK!

5. Keep some low calorie foods available - perhaps cereal bars, fruit - or popcorn is surprisingly healthy. Hopefully these will be the foods that you go for if you feel the need to have something a bit different.
